UN Secretary-General to address UU lecture
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan is to visit Northern Ireland later this month to deliver a speech at the University of Ulster.
Mr Annan will deliver the latest in the Tip O’Neill lecture series on the theme of peacebuilding at the universities Magee campus on October 18.
Professor Gerry McKenna, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ulster, said he was delighted to welcome an “international statesman of the Secretary-General’s distinction” to the University.
“At no time since the end of World War 2 has the role of the United Nations been more important in the world. It is a privilege for the university to host such a lecture and to share with many of our friends from the wider world this important occasion,” Professor McKenna said.
Meanwhile, Sandra Griffiths, senior lecturer in the School of Education at UU, has been appointed President of the All Ireland Society for Higher Education (AISHE).
AISHE is a professional society whose goal is to bring together and support those people who are concerned to advance higher education in the island of Ireland.
It promotes the professional recognition and enhancement of teaching and learning in Higher Education through a range of activities including seminars, conferences, publications, and provision of online community forums and services.
Ms Griffiths said: “I am delighted to take on this role at a time when there are so many challenging and exciting learning and teaching issues in higher education.
“The immediate task is to advance and complete plans for an international conference to be held in Belfast in May 2005.”
The conference will be the second time AISHE has held a joint venture with the UK’s Staff and Educational Development Association.
