Investigation launched into chicken cancer scare

An investigation has been launched into how a banned antibiotic which increases the risk of cancer was found in organic chicken processed at a Northern Ireland factory.

Traces of nitrofuran were found in some chickens processed at Moy Park in Co Tyrone during a routine check and have been sold throughout the UK by Tesco, Waitrose and Morrisons.

The Dungannon-based factory said it was working closely with the Department of Agriculture to find the source of the contamination however it said that any risk to humans was “very low”.

"The apparent risk is close to zero and you have to eat it over a long period and a lot of it,” a company spokesperson said.

"If people have eaten one, hopefully they will be assured that it's a one-off incident and we are deeply sorry for the distress caused.

"Directly we know what happened and why it happened, we'll be able to put a stop on it."
