Frozen fireworks assets appeal goes to court
One of three individuals who had assets of over £300,000 frozen by a High Court judge last week, is appealing against a penalty order regarding 165 tonnes of fireworks.
Albert, Jessica and Paul Baxter, all from Carrickfergus, saw their assets frozen by the High Court last week after an application by the Assets Recovery Agency, set up to combat organised crime.
Three registered companies in Northern Ireland and a fourth in Leeds, an apartment and a house in the Carrickfergus area, three luxury BMW cars, and a business in the Canary Islands, were all seized during the operation last Thursday.
However, one of the defendants, Albert Baxter, has appealed the seizure of the fireworks, which were imported from China, and which cost some £87,000, but are thought to have a street value of £2.5 million.
They were seized last year when the police raided a store at Broughshane in Co Antrim.
In court on Tuesday the defence counsel asked for an adjourment handing the judge a document which, he said, set out the situation.
After reading the paper, Judge Norman Lockie said it was an "unusual situation" that could become complicated, and adjourned the hearing until next month.

Portadown couple have assets frozen by High Court
A couple from Portadown have today had assets worth more than £3.5 million frozen by Belfast's High Court. The Assets Recovery Agency alleges that Mark and Beverley McKinney, of Woodlands Manor, are involved in drug, fuel and cigarette smuggling, and money laundering. They also alleged that Mr McKinney was involved with loyalist paramilitaries.
