Future of F1's British Grand Prix is secured
The British motorsport industry has the "opportunity to further enhance its reputation as a world leader" after the future of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone was secured, according Sports Minister Richard Caborn.
He was speaking after it was confirmed that, with 19 races now on the 2005 Formula One calendar, the British Grand Prix is secure. Its place now awaits official ratification at the FIA World Council meeting in Monaco on December 10.
As well as securing the showpiece Grand Prix event, the Minister said he was confident that this deal would be "the springboard needed for the industry to make further developments to its world-class business cluster in the East Midlands".
He said: "This deal is excellent news for not just the thousands of Formula One fans in the UK, but the motorsport industry that revolves around the Silverstone Grand Prix as well. It now represents a fantastic opportunity for everyone involved in UK motor sport to further enhance the industry's reputation as a world leader.
"We are now determined through the partnership of the British Racing Drivers Club, local authorities and the Development Agencies to not just make the necessary circuit improvements but build the world's best high performance motorsport industry cluster too. With F1's many British based teams now remaining on these shores, we will have the continued supply of 40,000 jobs as well."
Derek Mapp, Chairman of the East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA), who has represented government departments during negotiations, added: "This is great news for both UK motorsport fans and manufacturers and provides the basis for further partnership working to secure additional investment to secure the future and the UK's leadership of this world class business."
