Coastguard call off search for missing fisherman

The Coastguard has called of its search for the remaining fisherman who went missing on Wednesday.

Colin Donnelly, 30, had been fishing for crabs off the coast of Kilkeel with colleague Shane Murnaghan, 28, when their 11-metre boat, Emerald Dawn, sank.

While Mr Murnaghan was found on a life raft close to the Isle of Man on Thursday, Mr Donnelly has still not been found.

A Coastguard spokesperson said there was "no hope left" that Mr Donnelly could be found alive after more than 24 hours in the water.

Speaking about their loss, Colin’s father, Bernard, said he was glad their son’s friend had been found: "My son didn't make it to the life raft, but it is better to have one than to have lost two.

"I mean that from the bottom of my heart. Shane is a member of my family - we are just all one family - though we are not related, but we are related in every other way.

"He is a friend and a colleague and I am so glad for the Murnaghan family to have their son home again."

Mr Murnaghan was winched to safety by a helicopter after being found by a freight ferry.

Currently being treated in an Isle of Man hospital for hypothermia, he has been visted by some of his family members.

The cause of the tragedy is still unclear.
