UUP win secures Larne by-election seat
The Ulster Unionist Party has successfully held its seat in the Larne council by-election.
In a hotly contested battle for the Council seat left vacant by the late Ulster Unionist Councillor, David Fleck, Andrew Wilson of the UUP won 645 of the first preference votes beating Louise Marsden of the DUP who took 611 first preferences.
Commenting on the victory, Cllr. Wilson said: "I am absolutely delighted by the victory here today in East Antrim and would like to extend my thanks to all those who helped out with the campaign. I will strive to represent my constituents to the best of my ability and look after their needs.
“The win here today gives us a strong basis on which to fight the next election and the political momentum we need as we enter election year. The result proves that the Ulster Unionist Party is still the leading force in East Antrim.”
DUP Assembly Member for East Antrim, Sammy Wilson MLA said that despite the defeat, Louise Marsden’s “strong showing” demonstrated the continued growth of the party in the area.
“The result is an improvement on our good performance in 2001 and suggests that the party is set to win the next Westminster election in East Antrim,” Mr Wilson said. “The DUP candidate has increased the party’s share of the vote in the area and also our share of the unionist vote in Roy Beggs’s own council area."

Craigavon Falls To UU 'Girl Power'
There has been a resounding win at the ballot box in Co Armagh for a young Ulster Unionist woman. The poll victor, Jo-Anne Dobson secured 64% of the vote in the Lurgan ward, winning 2,494 votes. Traditional Unionist Voice's David Calvert received 752 votes, Liam Mackle of Sinn Féin got 401 votes, while SDLP candidate Pat McDade got 256 votes.

John McCallister Quits UUP
The Ulster Unionist Party’s Basil McCrea and deputy leader John McCallister are to resign. The decisions are in protest at the UUP and DUP’s decision to back a joint candidate for the Mid Ulster by-election on 7 March. The seat has become open following the stepping-down of deputy First Minister, Sinn Féin’s Martin McGuinness.
