Council invites ideas for ‘Titanic’ attraction
Belfast City Council and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board have appointed an international team of specialists to draw up plans for a world-class visitor attraction based on both Titanic and Belfast’s wider industrial heritage.
The Council and the Tourist Board said they have committed £70,000 for extensive global research into the viability of a Titanic-themed tourist attraction in Belfast.
Councillor Nelson McCausland, Chairman of Belfast City Council’s Tourism Sub-Committee, said the council had taken the civic lead on recognising the role that Titanic has to play, “not only in Belfast’s past but in its future”.
“The Titanic story is probably one of the most fascinating, amazing, poignant, thought provoking and absorbing tales from the last century, if not the last millennium,” Councillor McCausland said.
Alan Clarke, Chief Executive of the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, said that Titanic had been identified as a project that could generate international stand out for Northern Ireland.
“Titanic has been highlighted as a Signature Project for Northern Ireland in NITB’s Strategic Framework for Action 2003-07. There is already a huge level of awareness of the Titanic brand in the market place and the time is now right for Northern Ireland to capitalize on this tremendous opportunity,” Mr Clarke said.
