Murphy welcomes Portadown regeneration plans
Secretary of State Paul Murphy has congratulated those behind a new Development Framework in Portadown which aims to improve the physical and economic regeneration of the Co Armagh town.
Speaking in Portadown after seeing some of the sites that could be transformed by the implementation of the Framework, Mr Murphy said there was enormous potential to develop derelict sites surrounding the town centre for the benefit of the whole community.
“This Development Framework has the potential to revitalise a town centre which has deteriorated over the years and make better use of vacant sites and waterfront development opportunities,” he said. “Our vision is to create a vibrant and multifunctional town centre, enhanced in a way that complements Portadown’s historic character and takes account of major location benefits such as the river Bann, the railway and road network.
“I am pleased that this Development Framework has cross party support within Craigavon Borough Council and I believe it has the potential to deliver benefits for all of the people of Portadown and the surrounding areas.”
The Department for Social Development, as the lead body for City and Town Centre Regeneration, will work with the reconstituted regeneration company Portadown 2000 to facilitate the implementation of the plan.
