NI to face Portugal as part of IFA celebrations

Northern Ireland have lined up a glamour friendly against European Championship runners-up Portugal to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Irish Football Association (IFA).

The fixture has been scheduled for 16 November 2005 at Windsor Park but depends on neither country being involved in the World Cup play-offs.

Irish FA president Jim Boyce said: "It is great to get Portugal. Their team is packed with star names and will be a big attraction.”

Northern Ireland will also play Germany next June as part of IFA celebrations with the Portugal match ending a fantastic year for Northern Ireland supporters with the visit of England and Wales also taking place in Belfast as part of the World Cup qualifiers.

Last week, it was also confirmed that Lawrie Sanchez’s side will face Canada at Windsor Park ahead of their double header World Cup fixtures away to England and Poland in March.
