Belfast doctor plunges to death on New Zealand mountain
A Belfast doctor has died after a fall on a New Zealand mountainside, it was confirmed today.
Experienced hillwalker and climber, Dr Donal Deery, 29, was descending from a peak on the South Island's Southern Alps when he plunged to his death, the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin said.
He was being accompanied by a female companion who also plunged 800ft into a drainage area near the town of Wanaka.
The 25-year-old woman, who is also thought to be from Northern Ireland, but whose name has not yet been released, is said to have suffered internal injuries and fractures to her back. She is recovering in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Dunedin, New Zealand about 100 miles from the scene of the fatal accidnet.
The alarm was raised by a third person in the hiking party ran to an emergency hut to alert rescuers to the incident.
Snowstorms and high winds are preventing emergency teams from airlifting the climber's body from the slope.
Dr Deery, a junior doctor, had worked on rotation in a number of Northern Ireland hospitals.

The body of a Belfast doctor who fell to his death from a New Zealand mountainside has been recovered, it was confirmed today. Donal Deery, 29, died after falling 200 metres down a ravine as he was walking in the South Island's Southern Alps last week with his girlfriend, 25-year-old Helen McClements.
