Campaign aims to raise wetlands awareness
The Environment & Heritage Service (EHS) today announced a two-week awareness campaign to promote both Northern Ireland’s wetlands and World Wetlands Day.
The DOE’s EHS and a coalition of eight environmental organisations, called the Freshwater Taskforce, are encouraging everyone to take part in the annual World Wetlands Day on 2 February.
Shaun D’Arcy Burt, of the EHS, said: “Northern Ireland has some of the most diverse wetlands in Europe. From loughs to coasts, rivers and bogs, they provide vital and unique habitats for local and migrating fish, plant and animal species.
“World Wetlands Day is a chance to celebrate these natural assets and the cultural practices and beliefs that have evolved around them and I encourage everyone to appreciate, enjoy and protect our wetlands.”
World Wetlands Day marks the date of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea.
Special events will be taking place across Northern Ireland details of which are available at www.ehsni.gov.uk.
