Qualification to give students a working edge
Local exams body CCEA has launched a new qualification that develops important work-readiness skills, recognises students’ wider interests, and can contribute towards all important UCAS points when applying to university.
CCEA will be making the Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE) qualification, available to Northern Ireland schools and colleges from September 2005.
Speaking today at a launch of the new qualification in the Hilton Hotel Templepatrick, CCEA spokesman Dr Charlie Sproule said: “In an increasingly competitive environment, universities and employers are looking for young people with more that just GCSEs and A levels.
“They want to see prospective students and employees who can demonstrate that they’ve mastered skills such as the ability to work with others, problem solving, good oral communication and presentation skills.
“Whether going on to further education or employment, students holding this qualification will be able to prove just that.
“From the teachers’ point of view the Certificate of Personal Effectiveness is also a way of recognising and rewarding students’ wider interests, achievements and personal qualities.
CCEA has entered into an agreement with ASDAN (Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network) to offer the CoPE qualification in Northern Ireland. The qualification is accredited as part of the National Qualifications Framework.

Graduate Entry Medical Students To Benefit From Tuition Fee Loans
Economy Minister Conor Murphy has announced that from the 2025/26 academic year, students enrolled in the Graduate Entry Medical School at Ulster University's Derry-Londonderry campus will be eligible for tuition fee loans. Previously, graduate entry medical students were unable to access government loans to cover tuition fees.

GCSE Results On The Rise In NI
Around 30,000 students across Northern Ireland have received their GCSE results today, 23 August, resulting in a 0.7% rise in passing grades A*-C. Approximately 81.1% of NI GCSE entries secured passing grades with around 10% receiving the top A* grade. The performance gap widened between boys and girls with 85.

Just Over 40 Appeals Issued Over A-Level And GCSE Grades
Just over 40 appeals have been lodged in the last six days following this year’s A-Level and GCSE results in Northern Ireland. This is a drop from 1,687 appeals in 2020 and 1,926 in 2019, in six days.
