NIO Minister John Spellar has commenced discussions on ‘A Shared Future’, the final draft policy for improving relations in Northern Ireland, with the province’s main political parties.

The document sets out aims, actions and mechanisms to achieve Government’s vision of a more shared and inclusive society.

‘A Shared Future’, which was published for consultation two years ago, attracted over 500 formal submissions, and the planned round of meetings will help to finalise the proposals contained in the document.

Following a meeting with the Alliance party earlier this month and a further series of meetings yesterday with the SDLP, DUP and Sinn Féin, Mr Spellar said: "It is important to move ahead to finalise this important area of public policy before Easter and I welcome this opportunity to focus on a number of key issues with the parties.

"For example, I will be keen to hear their views on a more enhanced community relations role for district councils; more coherent implementation of actions across government departments and agencies; the need to broaden and deepen political and civic representation on the Community Relations Council; and the challenge for us all to build relationships with and between communities."

However, despite welcoming the discussions, Sinn Féin said the document fell short “of what is required to move forward collectively to understand, acknowledge and develop a society based primarily on equality, good relations and respect for human rights”.

“Sinn Fein remains concerned that equality will not be placed at the centre of building for good relations,” South Belfast MLA Alex Maskey added.
