NI school choir through to UK competition final
Belfast’s Methodist College Junior Choir has won through to the final of the UK’s largest national amateur choral competition, BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year.
The Methodist group sung to a packed house at the semi-finals of the competition at The Lowry, Salford, Greater Manchester, at the weekend.
In all 18 choirs from across the country performed at the semi-finals and the Methodist College Junior Choir was one of four choirs from Northern Ireland to take part.
The two other choirs from Belfast, Grosvenor Grammar School Junior Choir and Loughside Chamber Choir, were runners up in the Children’s and Adult categories respectively. St Patrick’s Academy Senior Choir from Dungannon was a runner up in the Youth category.
Methodist will now compete at the final, which takes place on 20 February at The Lowry. At the final, six choirs from the children, youth and adult categories will be singing for victory to win the accolade BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year and be seen as one of the best amateur choirs in the country. The winning choir is specially commissioned to represent the UK in the pan European choral competition Let The Peoples Sing.
International composer, conductor and gospel choir director, Ken Burton, will lead all choirs and the audience in a massed singing session while the judges decide on the winner.

A leading Belfast school choir has been back on stage to win yet another competition, writes Carla Liébana. Methodist College Choir took the honours at the first semi-final of Co-Operation Ireland's School Choir '09 which took place yesterday in Belfast. The choir will sing again in the grand final at the Belfast's Ulster Hall.
