Ulster Weavers to axe 80 jobs in NI
A leading Northern Ireland textile firm has announced it is to close two of its four operations with the loss of 80 jobs.
Ulster Weavers is to close its Armagh factory with the loss of 38 jobs while its plant in Castlewellan, Co Down will also be shut down, with the loss of 39 jobs. Further jobs are also expected to go at the company's head office near Banbridge.
Commenting on the news, Ulster Unionist MLA Danny Kennedy said he was calling on the Government to be much more supportive of local businesses in the textile sector.
“Industry in general is finding production costs increasing in Northern Ireland and firms in textile manufacturing are fighting what appears to be a losing battle to hold their own in the international market,” Mr Kennedy said.
“The loss of jobs at Ulster Weavers is devastating news and is another sorry chapter in the story of a once proud industry in the Province.”
Ulster Weavers said it would still employ more than 150 people in its remaining factories following the cuts.

A leading clothing firm is to close its two remaining factory's in Co Londonderry with the loss of nearly 300 jobs. Desmond & Sons announced on Wednesday that it is to close its factory at Newbuildings and cutting room at Springstown, with the loss of 277 and 16 jobs respectively.

Offshore Company Axes Jobs
Around 150 jobs in Aberdeen and Dundee have been axed after an offshore services company ceased trading. Oceanteam Power and Umbilical has been forced to close when the firm's holding company withdrew its financial support. Staff are based in Aberdeen, at workshops in Dundee and offshore.
