Councillor calls for clampdown on mini-motorbikes
Ulster Unionist councillor for West Belfast, Chris McGimpsey, has called for authorities to clampdown on the sale of mini-motorcycles in inner city areas.
The call followed the death of a young boy in the Shankill Road area on Thursday morning. The four-year-old boy, named locally as David Spence, was a passenger on a mini-scrambler style motorbike which was being ridden by an adult when it collided with a car at the junction of Berlin Street and Riga Street off the Shankill Road at around 11.30am yesterday.
In a statement, Cllr McGimpsey said: “This was a tragic accident and my sympathies go out to the family.
“A major factor in this tragedy is the short practice of rogue salesmen who irresponsibly trade in mini-motorcycles in residential areas.
“I call upon the DoE, police and related government agencies to clampdown on the trade of such machines. This trade needs to be regularised through an association to stop unscrupulous individuals taking their profits and moving on without care or thought to the harm they could cause.”
Police officers have appealed for any witnesses to yesterday's fatal accident to come forward.
