UCF calls for No Smoking Day support
The Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF) has called on local people to support this year’s No Smoking Day which takes place on March 9.
UCF said this year’s campign was about providing smokers who want to quit, with the motivation and support they need to be successful.
Gerry McElwee, Head of Cancer Prevention, UCF, said: “No Smoking Day 2005 is about planning ahead, to ‘wake up’ to a fresh start on the Day.
“Giving up smoking is one of the best things people can do to improve their health. Smokers are well aware of the health consequences of smoking, for instance lung cancer, heart disease and stroke, and this can make them want to stop. However, on a day-to-day basis, it’s often the smell, the mess and the expense that make people want to give up.
“Every year in Northern Ireland, smoking causes 2,800 deaths from cancer and other illnesses.”
Current figures show that smoking is on the decrease among men in the province, but on the increase among women. Today, 26% of men and 28% of women smoke and lung cancer now causes more deaths among women in Northern Ireland than breast cancer.

Over 800 young people from schools in Lisburn and Castlereagh attended a hard-hitting road safety message at the PSNI Road Safe Roadshow on 19 November. The roadshow, supported by AXA Insurance and the Northern Ireland Road Safety Partnership, aims to educate young drivers about the dangers of irresponsible driving.

Sinn Féin has called for more to be done to improve mental health services across the north of Ireland. The party's mental health spokesperson, MLA Órlaithí Flynn, made the call after the release of the Registrar General's 2023 Annual Report which has highlighted an increase in deaths by suicide in 2023.
