Three die in NI every month because of asthma
A new report into asthma has revealed that three people die in Northern Ireland every month from the respiratory ailment.
'A Moving Picture – Asthma in Northern Ireland Today', the first of three reports, is the result of in-depth interviews with almost 300 people with asthma in the province.
The report reveals that only one in four people with asthma in Northern Ireland expect their medicines to control their symptoms and help them lead unrestricted lives.
Four out of five people are still experiencing daily asthma symptoms and yet their confidence in local health care practitioners and routine care is higher than anywhere else in the UK.
On average each month there are 200 hospital admissions for asthma in the province.
Northern Ireland currently has the highest proportion of adults over 45 being admitted to hospital for asthma in the UK while in 2002 there were 35 deaths from the ailment in the province.
'A Moving Picture' gives an insight into the everyday experiences, quality of life and standards of care for the 150,000 people living with asthma in Northern Ireland.
