All criminality and paramilitarism must cease – Murphy
Secretary of State Paul Murphy has reaffirmed the need for all criminal and paramilitary activity to end before the peace process can get back on track.
Speaking today on the ITV News Channel Mr Murphy said that in order to bring trust and confidence back into the political system it was vital that there is an end to criminality and paramilitary activity.
“Until criminality within all paramilitary organisations comes to an end we are not going to get into a position where we can improve the political situation and go further down the political path which the Good Friday Agreement started,” Mr Murphy said.
“Once this is achieved, we will be in a position to ensure that political parties here will sit around a table and form a fully functioning Assembly and Executive and I certainly want that to happen as soon as is practicable.”
Meanwhile, SDLP leader Mark Durkan has said that any assets seized from paramilitaries must be used to help victims of violence.
Mr Murphy said everything should be done to stamp out racketeers and that any money seized could be used to help fund counselling and trauma centres, respite care and compensation.
He said if people knew seized assets would go directly to people who have suffered “then it creates more public demand for this to happen".

Two arrested in connection with 'terrorist crime'
Two men have been arrested in County Londonderry, in connection with serious crime. The men were arrested in Bellaghy yesterday in connection with an investigation into suspected republican paramilitary criminality in the province. Meanwhile, a man has been arrested in County Armagh in relation to "dissident terrorist crime" in the area.

Murphy calls for end to all paramilitary activity
Secretary of State Paul Murphy has said that there must be a complete, total and definitive end to all paramilitary activity. Speaking on Radio Ulster this morning, Mr Murphy said that the two Prime Ministers emphasised at yesterday's meetings with the political parties the two main issues that needed to be tackle.

Issue of criminality must be resolved, says Murphy
A fully inclusive Executive in Northern Ireland cannot be established until the issue of criminality has been resolved, Secretary of State Paul Murphy has said today. Mr Murphy was speaking during Wednesday’s Northern Ireland Questions in the House of Commons, the first since the Northern Bank robbery.
