Economic cross-border co-operation important
Good North/South relations are essential to the economic wellbeing of the island of Ireland, NIO Minister Ian Pearson has said.
The Minister was speaking in Newry at an awards ceremony for public sector officials from both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, at the conclusion of the first ever training course in cross-border co-operation.
Mr Pearson said:“Building good North/South relationships is important for the future economic development of the island of Ireland. Over the next decade there will be massive spending on infrastructure projects, both North and South, and in many areas co-operation will be essential if the best return on investment is to be achieved.”
Mr Pearson also highlighted a range of areas where practical cross-border co-operation was presently ongoing.
“Work on the A1 from Sprucefield to Newry, and N1 from Newry to Dundalk is being undertaken by the roads authorities in the two jurisdictions acting in concert,” he said.
“Work is under way to explore the implications of developing a common energy market for Ireland. There is practical work taking place to develop a joint approach to implementing EU Directives in the environmental sphere.
However, the Minister cautioned those working in the field of cross-border co-operation to be cognisant of the sensitivities and complexities that surround this particular issue and to exercise care and judgement at all times.
He commended the organisations which had the vision to provide training in this field of growing importance and said he was pleased to offer his support to such an exciting and worthwhile venture.
Together with Brendan Smith TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food, Mr Pearson presented certificates to the course participants.
