Family of stabbing victim has Adams meeting cancelled

A meeting scheduled for today between Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams and the family of a man murdered in Londonderry two years ago has been cancelled.

Jimmy McGinley, 23, was stabbed through the heart during a fight at Sackville Court in Londonderry in October 2003.

His family claim that local man Bartholomew Fisher, 43, who was sentenced to three years in jail in February for his manslaughter, is in the IRA, and that members of the organisation intimidated them throughout his trial.

Today’s discussions were cancelled after members of the press arrived at scene of the meeting in Clonard.

Mr Adams said: “Today’s meeting was postponed at the request of Clonard Monastery because of the presence of the media.

“I had arranged for the meeting to be held at Clonard in order that I and the family could have a private discussion.

The West Belfast MP said he had informed the McGinley family that any rescheduled meeting was unlikely to take place until after the May 5th elections.
