Aviation authorities called on to ‘heed’ crash warning

Ulster Unionist councillor Sir Reg Empey has called on aviation authorities to reconsider any expansion plans for Belfast City Airport after a light aircraft crashed in nearby playing fields at the weekend.

The plane came down in playing fields close to the airport shortly after take off at around 5.50pm on Saturday.

The pilot of the plane is currently in a crucial condition in hospital after suffering severe burns in the crash.

Sir Reg said: "One shudders to think what would have happened if an A321 Airbus had come down in this area. Maybe this will be a wake-up call which I hope the authorities will heed.”

Witnesses claim to have seen the light aircraft clip a tree between the Sydenham by-pass and Inverary playing fields before crashing and bursting into flames.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch of the Department of Transport will investigate the cause of the crash.
