Meat firm to investigate sectarian taunts
Management at a Londonderry meat factory are to hold an investigation into alleged sectarian abuse aimed at Polish workers last week.
The incident occurred at Foyle Meats with 30 Polish workers claiming they were taunted about the death of Pope John Paul II by colleagues. The workers eventually walked out in protest.
A spokesperson for the company said that if the allegations were proven to be correct then appropriate measures, including possible disciplinary action, would be taken.
Katrina Kordula of the Polish Welfare Association, who has taken up the case for the workers, said the affected employees were fearful they might face disciplinary action.
"Everyone is nervous about what is going to happen when they go into the factory," she said.
"They are nervous about the fact that some of them walked out and that they may actually lose their jobs."
Polish workers account for 95 of the 280 strong workforce at the factory.

SF Calls For Action On NI Mental Health Services
Sinn Féin has called for more to be done to improve mental health services across the north of Ireland. The party's mental health spokesperson, MLA Órlaithí Flynn, made the call after the release of the Registrar General's 2023 Annual Report which has highlighted an increase in deaths by suicide in 2023.
