Environment 'unlocks voter apathy' says WWF
Nearly 40% of Northern Ireland’s electorate would be more likely to vote if a political party showed a definite commitment to the environment, a recent survey has claimed.
The poll of more than 1,000 people, carried out on behalf of WWF Northern Ireland, showed that 45% of the 45-54 age group would be motivated to vote on environmental issues whereas the over 65s had the lowest swing, with only 35%.
The survey also showed that almost a third of voters could be persuaded to switch party allegiance if the environment was a bigger electoral issue. Those living in Belfast would be most willing with 39% of those surveyed agreeing and those living in Tyrone and Fermanagh least willing, with 28% saying they would consider it.
"These results are a clear indication of how strongly people feel about the environment around them and the need to protect it,” said Jim Kitchen, Head of WWF Northern Ireland.
“For too long issues such as climate change and the protection of our seas and rivers have languished at the bottom of the pile of manifesto commitments. Let's hope our parties take this opportunity to respond to the people and to redress the environmental balance.”
WWF Northern Ireland said it would be encouraging political parties and political candidates to consider its 'Environmental Manifesto for Northern Ireland' in the run up to May’s general election.
