Belfast plans WWII victory commemorations
Belfast City Council has announced plans for a series of events in 2005 and 2006 to commemorate the 60th anniversaries of VE Day (victory in Europe) and VJ Day (victory over Japan), which marked the end of World War II.
Mervyn Elder, Director of Belfast City Council’s Community and Recreation Department, said the events would be an opportunity “to honour the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice, to thank the survivors and to remember the jubilant celebrations that broke out sixty years ago”.
“We want to bring together people of all ages and from all communities, in what is a celebration of peace,” he added.
The Belfast commemoration programme includes an Anne Frank Exhibition, Puccini’s La Boheme opera in Botanic Gardens as well as a star studded gala evening of entertainment hosted by Eamon Holmes and starring, among others, Max Bygraves OBE, May McFettridge, William Caulfield with his highly acclaimed James Young Tribute, and Clubsound, fronted by BBC Radio Ulster’s George Jones.
