Conflict and cultural regeneration experts arrive in NI
Experts in conflict and cultural regeneration from across Europe will be flying into Northern Ireland this week to take part in a University of Ulster conference.
The Northern Ireland Centre for European Co-Operation (NICEC) is hosting the two-day event, which will explore the social challenges posed by cultural regeneration following times of conflict; and the challenges to preventing conflict in an enlarged and diverse European Union.
Dr Billy Leonard from NICEC said: “This conference is an opportunity to bring together the experiences gained and networks already established by NICEC. We will explore the expanded EU and European project at this time and how it can help resolve or prevent conflicts.
“We hope to establish where and what are the main challenges to Europe today in this context and what further contribution can be made by NICEC.”
Nollaig Ó Fiongháile, also from NICEC, added: “The cultural and creative industries are increasingly playing a central role in the regeneration programmes of urban and rural areas including Barcelona, Bilbao, Newcastle and Dublin.
“This conference will allow us to consolidate our investigations and to consider factors for success and relevance to our experience in Northern Ireland.
Culture and Conflict: Social Challenges for Tomorrow’s Europe will take place from April 19–20 2005 at the Radisson Hotel, Limavady.
Guest speakers will include Senator Maurice Hayes, Chairman of the National Forum on Europe, and Professor John Hume, Holder of the Tip O’Neill Chair in Peace Studies at the University of Ulster.
