University of Ulster secures £1.5m funding
The University of Ulster has secured funding of more than £1.5 million over a five year period to support teaching and learning activities in Information and Computer Sciences throughout the UK’s higher education sector.
The University hosts the Higher Education Academy subject centre for Information and Computer Sciences – the only one sited in Northern Ireland. In total the Higher Education Academy has 24 subject centres in the UK.
Dr Gerry McAllister, Head of the School of Computing and Mathematics and Director of the subject centre, said: “We provide support for the 120 ICS departments in higher education throughout the UK.
“The centre organises an extensive programme of events to provide opportunities for professional development in learning and teaching within the ICS community. Regional events, workshops and a high profile annual conference are complemented by a programme of web-based activities enabling participation and interaction throughout the community”.
The subject centre at UU has five permanent staff and two placement students and works in conjunction with the University of Loughborough, where there is one additional staff member.
The centre currently covers all parts of the UK which will be preserved in future plans “in order to ensure the widest possible debate and exchange of expertise in facilitating the teaching and learning of Information and Computer Science”, Dr McAllister added.
