Belfast man remanded in custody following weapons find
A Belfast man has been remanded in custody following a weapons and ammunition find in north Belfast on Wednesday.
James Samuel Armstrong, 25, of Wilton Street close to the Shankill Road, is charged with having an AK-47 assault rifle, a Browning pistol and ammunition in suspicious circumstances. He is also charged with having the same items with intent to endanger life.
A detective told Belfast Magistrates Court on Friday that when Mr Armstrong was charged he replied: "Not guilty”. The officer said he could connect him with the arms find.
Following Wednesday’s searches, Chief Superintendent Mike Little, DCU Commander, said paramilitary or criminal activity in North Belfast would not be tolerated.
“The community in North Belfast are telling us that they do not want to live in the shadows of paramilitary organisations,” Mr Little said. “My officers are committed to eradicating the scourge of paramilitaries in this area and we will continue to work to make North Belfast a safer place to live.”
Mr Armstrong was remanded in custody to appear again via a video link on May 20.
