Council place greater emphasis on recycling
Belfast City Council has confirmed it will be introducing changes to some of its bin collections over the next few months – with an increasing emphasis on recycling.
Some 5,500 householders in the south of the city soon will be getting their blue bins. Coupled with a further roll-out later in the summer, this will mean that the Council will have distributed more than 50,000 blue bins by the end of August. Another 20,000 blue bins will follow at the beginning of next year.
From the beginning of June, all Belfast’s blue bins will take cardboard, plastic bottles, tins and cans as well as paper.
At the beginning of the summer, 33,000 Belfast households also will be receiving brown bins, for garden waste. Another 19,000 brown bins will follow later in the year.
As a result of the enhanced recycling service, changes also will be made to the collection of black bins. From June 6, black bins will be collected every two weeks, with collections alternating with those for the recycling bins.
Thousands of letters, leaflets and stickers have been distributed to households benefiting from the new service, however anyone wanting further information can contact either the Recycling Hotline on 0800 032 8100 or the Customer Contact Centre on 028 9027 0230.

About 55,000 homes in Belfast are to benefit from a new recycling scheme that will seek to maximise the amount of waste households can recycle. The changes will be rolled out between August and November and will affect inner-city homes currently on a black recycling box collection, as well as apartments with communal recycling facilities.
