Lyric Theatre jobs under threat
Up to 30 jobs could be under threat at one of Belfast’s best known theatres, it emerged today.
Management at the Lyric Theatre have warned staff of possible redundancies as part of an efficiency drive after being told to prepare for restructuring to save money on administration.
South Belfast Sinn Féin Assembly member Alex Maskey said staff were “shocked and surprised” after learning of the proposals.
“At a time when the Lyric is bidding for a new site adjacent to the current building the news that financial problems are threatening jobs in the theatre is obviously a major worry,” Mr Maskey said.
“Local elected representatives in City Hall have been working hard along with the management at the Lyric to try and advance the new building project.
“Given the hopes which exist for the future of the theatre today’s news will be received with shock and surprise by many.”
The chairman of the theatre, David Johnston, said talks with the trade unions would precede any redundancy notices and that he wanted to see a shift of funding from administration to production of plays.
