IRA authorises discussion on Adams peace call
Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams has received confirmation from the IRA leadership that it has authorised discussions on his call for the provisional group to "fully embrace and accept" democratic means.
Speaking on Wednesday the West Belfast Westminster candidate said he was confident “that the IRA will take this debate forward with all the seriousness that it deserves”.
“I firmly believe that the way forward is by building political support for republican and democratic objectives across Ireland and internationally. Irish republicanism is at a defining point,” Mr Adams said.
“The peace process is at a defining point. A positive decision by the IRA at the end of its internal deliberations will have enormous significance and impact. It has the potential to halt the downward spiral in the peace process and to strengthen our ability to advance our republican objectives.”
In a letter sent to the leadership of the republican group earlier this month, Mr Adams praised the IRA for keeping “every commitment made by its leadership” since its ceasefire announcement in 1994.
He said that while he had supported the right of the IRA to engage in armed struggle he did so because there was no alternative.

£17m To Support Pensioners Affected By Winter Fuel Payment Changes
Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has announced a £17 million fund to support pensioners who have lost eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment due to recent UK government changes. The one-off £100 payment will be automatically issued to an estimated 250,000 pensioners in around 170,000 households before the end of March 2025.

Pharmacist Sentenced For Drug Offences
A 27-year-old pharmacist from Belfast has been sentenced to 180 hours of community service for unlawfully possessing and stealing controlled prescription drugs. Adam Hanna pleaded guilty to charges under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and the Theft Act 1969. The offences took place at a North Belfast pharmacy between January and March 2024.
