Internet users warned of 'criminal cashback'
Internet users have been told to stay more alert when advertising on the Internet following reports of fraudulent cheques and credit transfers being used to book accommodation.
This scam, which has been dubbed 'criminal cashback', involves the buyer booking accommodation via the Internet and then sending a fraudulent cheque or draft made out for a much higher value than the agreed cost.
The purchaser tells the recipient to go ahead and lodge the cheque and then asks them to make a credit transfer for the outstanding amount.
The purchasers cheque is eventually processed and it will either turn out to be a stolen or false cheque and will inevitably be rejected by the bank. However, the credit transfer has already been sent and the cash is untraceable.
Detectives said that if anyone receives similar requests to report them to their local police station or Fraud Squad at Strandtown on 028 9065 0222.

Attempted Carjacking In West Belfast
Police are investigating an attempted carjacking in west Belfast on Tuesday, November 19th. At around 5:30pm, a man entered a parked car at Hillhead Court and attempted to steal it. A woman passenger was assaulted when she resisted the man's demands. The suspect, described as a man in his 20s wearing all black, fled the scene on foot.

Credit union customers in NI are to enjoy the same protection as those at ordinary banks. The Financial Services Authority (FSA) and HM Treasury (HMT) have today jointly announced that Northern Ireland's credit union customers will have their deposits protected to the value of £85,000.
