Stately home refurbishment wins building award
The refurbishment and extension of a Georgian-style mansion has won top prize in Northern Ireland’s leading built environment awards.
Flowerfield Arts Centre in Portstewart claimed the overall title of Building Project of the Year in the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Northern Ireland Awards 2005, sponsored by MD&C Laser Processes.
The judges said that the new facility, which includes a studio, workshop rooms, multi-media suite, gallery exhibition space, café, craft shop and 150-seater auditorium, is an important addition to the local area.
“The community in what is known locally as The Triangle, covering Portstewart, Portrush and Coleraine, has acquired in this project a stunning new facility which caters extremely well for a wide range of uses and users,” judges said.
“The restoration of the existing Georgian-style mansion has been successfully wedded to audacious design with the contemporary new extension, and excellent universal access has been made available with very good design detail throughout.”
Flowerfield, which won the Community Benefit category in the prestigious awards, beat off competition from 15 other shortlisted entries to claim the overall title.
The Gasworks site in Belfast topped the Regeneration category while St Matthew’s Church of Ireland in the Woodvale area of Belfast won the Building Conservation prize.

The student used her personal experience of type 1 diabetes to develop Insurin, an app to help guide people with a new diagnosis.
