Human rights experts to take part in Belfast conference
A number of Europe’s most influential human rights lawyers and political scientists are coming to Belfast to discuss recent challenges to international and European human rights law in global politics.
Along with experts from the Queen’s University Belfast Schools of Politics and International Studies and Law, delegates will discuss, among other things, the implementation and contested interpretation of human rights norms, the principle of non-intervention and the UN Convention against Torture.
Professor Antje Wiener, Director of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, has organised the event which takes place on May 20. She said: “We have invited experts from Canada, the USA, Germany, GB and Northern Ireland to take part in a stimulating and topical debate on a range of challenges to international law and how individual countries react in these crisis situations.”
The event is being sponsored by the Centre of European Studies and the Cluster of International Relations within Queen’s School of Politics and International Studies, as well as the Human Rights Centre in the Law School.

A successful scheme aimed at transforming vacant properties in Belfast city centre into thriving businesses is set to be extended across the entire city. Belfast City Council's Vacant to Vibrant programme has already breathed new life into 26 properties, with another six sites in the pipeline.
