Solicitor criticises DPP following Omagh bomb arrest

The solicitor acting for the man who is expected to be charged in connection with the 1998 Omagh bombing has criticised the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Peter Corrigan said it was “unacceptable” he had not been informed that the DPP had directed police to bring charges against his 35-year-old client, Sean Gerard Hoey.

“My reaction is one of profound shock," said Mr Corrigan. "Whilst acknowledging that the Crown and the DPP have an element of discretion in adding counts to an indictment, it is surprising that the DPP didn't obtain the Attorney General's consent for multitude murder offences.”

Mr Hoey, from Jonesborough in Co Armagh, is currently in custody on terror charges in relation to the atrocity.

A police spokesperson said "significant time and resources" had been dedicated to the ongoing investigation.

Twenty-nine were killed and hundreds were injured in the car bomb attack in the Co Tyrone town on 15 August 1998.

The bombing, which was later claimed by dissident republican paramilitary group the Real IRA, was the worst single atrocity in the Northern Ireland ‘Troubles’.
