Customs target illegal fuel sales
An HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) operation in Northern Ireland has led to the seizure of over 222,000 litres of fuel worth more than £200,000, and four vehicles used to illegally transport fuel.
HMRC’s multi-functional and specialist road fuel officers carried out the two-week operation (18 – 30 April) during which more than 40 petrol stations and fuel distributors were tested for illegal fuel across the province, resulting in the detention of 222,900 litres of fuel and the seizure of three fuel tankers and a box van.
HMRC Head of Detection Northern Ireland Colin McAllister said: “This is part of our ongoing activity to detect not only the smuggling and laundering of illegal fuel, but also the onward transport and sale through commercial outlets across Northern Ireland. Customs have stopped a substantial amount of harmful diesel entering the legitimate fuel market.
“It is no longer the case that using illegal fuel is worth the risk. All companies who have commercial vehicles detected will face audit and could be liable to heavier fines in respect of previous misuse".
No arrests have been made in relation to the operation, however police confirmed that enquiries are continuing.
