Firefighter treated in hospital following attack

A firefighter has been treated in hospital following an attack by a gang in west Belfast on Monday.

He was attacked by around 20-youths as he and colleagues tried to distinguish a pile of burning rubbish at Blacks Road, around 9pm. One of the attackers ran up to the firefighter and threw a large stone at his head leaving him with neck and head injuries.

Area Commander for Belfast, Chris Kerr, said it was only a matter of time before “we have a tragedy on our hands”.

"My crews are now being subjected to some form of recreational violence," he said. "People are deriving a sick sense of pleasure from firefighters being called to scenes and attacked.”

Public Safety Minister, Shaun Woodward described the attack as "outrageous".

“Firefighters provide a crucial service for everyone and this cowardly attack, by what appears to be a gang of youths, should not be tolerated," Mr. Woodward said.

"We need the public to stand fully behind everyone who bravely works in our emergency services."

Police have appealed for anyone with information on the incident to contact them on 028 9065 0222 or by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
