Hotelier fined for selling short measure beer

A Co Down hotelier has been fined £2,500 as part of a continuing Northern Ireland-wide campaign by the Trading Standards Service (TSS) to ensure licensed premises treat their customers fairly by “complying with all aspects of the law”.

On an inspection of The Old Inn, Crawfordsburn in December 2004, TSS Inspectors found that a glass used to sell beer was unstamped, and that the quantity fell short of an ordered half pint by more than 16%. They also found that the company was not displaying a bar price list. The hotelier pleaded guilty to all three charges.

TSS Inspector Simon Keegan said: “It is a legal requirement for licensees to use Government tested and stamped glasses and to deliver accurate measures to their customers.

“It is also a requirement that a prominent price list is displayed on the premises so customers see the price they have to pay before ordering their drinks.”

Mr Keegan called on any licensee who would like to ensure he or she is in compliance with the relevant legislation to contact Consumerline on 0845 600 62 62 or www.consumerline.org.
