Hain welcomes £2m environmental Derry project
Secretary of State Peter Hain today welcomed the completion of a £2 million environmental improvement project that has enhanced the appeal of Londonderry as a tourist attraction.
Mr Hain unveiled a plinth in the Diamond where the area has been transformed by new paving, lighting and the planting of semi-mature oak trees.
He said: “The challenge in regeneration is to conserve the best of your heritage whilst developing new projects that take communities forward.
“There has been significant progress made in regenerating this historic city, but much more needs to be done. I am here today to learn about the challenges facing Derry and to hear how Government, working in partnership with ILEX and the wider community, can play a part in helping the city realise its full potential as a regional capital city.”
Through its North West Development Office, the Department of Social Development (DSD) has provided more than £120 million for regeneration and community initiatives over the past 10 years.
Mr Hain also met with the Chairman and Directors of ILEX Urban Regeneration Company before going on a walkabout within the Walled City and visiting community regeneration projects funded by the DSD.
