Two men arrested in connection with McCartney murder
Two men have been arrested by police in connection with the murder of Belfast man Robert McCartney in January.
The arrests were made in Belfast and Birmingham on Wednesday with both men, aged 36 and 49, transferred to Antrim police station for questioning.
In a statement on the Birmingham arrest, West Midlands Police said: "In the early hours of this morning armed officers visited an address in Victoria Road, Stechford and arrested a 36-year-old man on behalf of the Police Service of Northern Ireland.
"The man has been transferred to Belfast for questioning in respect of the murder of Robert McCartney who died on 31 January 2005. A second man has also been arrested in Belfast."
Last month the family of Mr McCartney blamed republicans for threatening to burn them out of their homes and businesses.
The family were warned of threats by “criminal elements” by the PSNI shortly after returning home to Northern Ireland from Strasbourg, where they had been lobbying MEPs to help fund a civil case against those they believe to have been behind Mr McCartney’s murder.
The 33-year-old father-of-two died after he was stabbed following a row in a Belfast bar.
The IRA has been blamed for the murder as well as interfering with evidence and witnesses by the McCartney family.
