National Trust opens Divis and Black Mountain to public
One of Belfast’s most famous backdrop’s, Divis and Black Mountain, has opened to the public today thanks to the National Trust.
The Trust, which secured the upland last November, said it had carried out a huge amount of work to secure the property, protect the natural habitat of “this unique landscape” and provide open access for all.
Initial work has included clearing over 1,000 tonnes of debris from the site, constructing a ‘floating path’ or boardwalk to the summit of Black Mountain, securing buildings on the mountain, creating a car park as well as ensuring adequate signage in the area. Over 200 volunteers representing the public, private and voluntary sector have been involved in the clear-up operation.
Paddy Casement, National Trust Chairman for Northern Ireland said: “Today marks yet another new chapter in the National Trust’s history in Northern Ireland.
“We have now opened Divis and the Black Mountain and are able to provide free access all year round to these beautiful hills to the people of Belfast and Northern Ireland.
“We are helping to preserve and protect the rich and varied wildlife on the mountains and - working with the Belfast Hills Partnership and local communities - we have now opened this spectacular landscape that affords such spectacular views of the city, Belfast Lough and much of Northern Ireland.”

West Belfast Interface Wall Removed
Sections of a three-metre-high interface wall in west Belfast have been removed to make way for the construction of a new EU-funded shared community space. The Black Mountain Shared Space Project will see a new purpose-built, cross-community facility open in winter 2023 at an interface area between the Ballygomartin and Springfield communities.

Woman Seriously Sexually Attacked In Co Tyrone
A woman has been seriously sexually assaulted in Dungannon, Co Tyrone. The attack happened in the Peatlands Park area on Wednesday afternoon, 27 April. The victim was walking her dog when she was assaulted by a man who fled the scene in a black mountain bike.

Two Red Squirrels Released At Silent Valley Mountain Park
Two female red squirrels have been released at Silent Valley Mountain Park, Belfast Zoo has confirmed. The site was selected as part of a nation-wide scheme to enhance the population of the threatened species. Zoo manager, Alyn Cairns, said: "Belfast Zoo first became home to red squirrels in 2012 when three animals arrived from the Glens of Antrim.
