Rioters attack police with petrol & blast bombs, 80 injured, baton rounds fired
It has been reported that baton rounds were used by police during rioting in north Belfast last night, in which around 80 police officers were injured.
This is the first time baton rounds have been used in Northern Ireland since 2002.
The rioting began when nationalists attacked police after an Orange Order parade passed the Ardoyne shops area.
The police officers were attacked with petrol and blast bombs as well as bottles, bricks and other missiles.
One police officer was seriously injured and has undergone surgery in hospital. His condition is not believed to be life threatening.
Seven members of the public were injured, none seriously, and a number of people were arrested.

The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

Police Justified In Using AEP Baton Rounds And Tasers Against Armed Man
Police were justified in using AEP baton rounds and Tasers against a man armed with machete-type sword, the Police Ombudsman has concluded. Witnesses reported that the man had used the swords to hit himself on the head and cut his throat in the Stiles Way area of Antrim in the early hours of 17 January 2015.

The use of plastic baton rounds by police over the past year was “fully justified” a Police Ombudsman report has concluded. The Police Ombudsman’s report published on Tuesday deals with seven incidents, which took place in Counties Armagh and Antrim over a twelve-month period (April 2001 to March 2002).

Police fire 27 baton rounds as mob violence flares in east Belfast
Sectarian violence in east Belfast reached a new low yesterday, with police officers firing 27 baton rounds in an attempt to control mobs during rioting which lasted for over six hours. Last night's violence saw security forces come under sustained attack by masked gangs and nine officers were injured.
