Forty officers hurt during trouble in north Belfast
Forty police officers have been injured following rioting in the Woodvale area of north Belfast on Thursday.
The disorder broke out at around 5.30pm following a number of searches carried out by police in connection with investigations into an ongoing loyalist feud.
One bus was destroyed by fire and ten other vehicles were damaged. Eight of the vehicles damaged had been hijacked.
Officers came under sustained attacks involving petrol bombs, paint bombs, fireworks and at one point some form of explosive device. A hijacked HGV cab was also driven at police lines. In response officers fired 11 impact rounds during the trouble.
NIO Minister David Hanson condemned those behind the attacks. "Once again, it is loyalist paramilitaries who have brought violence into loyalist areas," the Minister said. "The PSNI will protect the whole community and must have the support of the whole community. Those with influence must use it to bring an end to this self destructive violence.”
The area was reported calm but tense early on Friday. Enquiries into the disturbances are continuing and video evidence is being examined.
