Historic pendant returned to Lord Mayor

An appeal by the Lord Mayor of Belfast for the return of a pendant which had fallen off the necklace of the Lady Mayoress’s chain has been answered after it was returned on Tuesday.

Councillor Wallace Browne had offered a substantial reward for the return of the pendant which was lost at a Botanic Gardens function on Sunday. It was eventually handed over at Belfast City Hall on Tuesday afternoon.

The Lord Mayor had noticed the pendant was missing just minutes after the Lady Mayoress, Ms Eileen McDougall, had put the chain on shortly before leaving the official car to attend the function. It seems likely that the hook holding the pendant had broken.

The pendant was commissioned and presented by councillors and the Town Clerk to its first wearer, Mrs Pirrie, back in 1897, and it bears the Arms and motto of the city.
