Defensive headache for Sanchez ahead of Malta game

Northern Ireland manager Lawrie Sanchez looks set to call up Burnley defender Michael Duff for this Wednesday’s friendly against Malta in Valetta.

With only three recognised defenders – Aaron Hughes, Colin Murdock and Stephen Craigan - named in his 16-man squad due to injuries, Sanchez has been forced to call up the former under-21 international for a possible sixth cap.

Missing are Chris Baird, Mark Clyde, George McCartney, Tony Capaldi and Gareth McAuley.

Also missing is QPR midfielder Tommy Doherty who was forced to retire from a league fixture on Saturday due to injury.

Northern Ireland go into Wednesday’s game without a win since last summer’s Carribean tour against Trinidad & Tobago.

Next month they face both Azerbaijan and England at Windsor Park in their 2006 World Cup qualifying group.

Wednesday’s squad: M Taylor, M Ingham, A Hughes, C Murdock, S Craigan, J Whitley, S Davis, D Johnson, C Brunt, S Elliott, K Gillespie, P Mulryne, D Healy, J Quinn, W Feeney, S Jones.
