Higher value markets produce sustainable returns, says minister
Agriculture Minister Jeff Rooker has announced two grant awards totalling £134,500 to encourage moves towards new higher-value markets.
The recipients of the new awards, which are made under the EU Marketing of Quality Agricultural Products Grant Scheme, are Ballyrashane Co-operative and Dairy Society and the Northern Ireland Potato Industry Stakeholder Group.
Commending both organisations in pursuing new markets, Mr Rooker said: "A move towards markets which are higher up the value chain will produce sustainable returns for our farmers and processors. Innovation and production efficiency are key to exploiting new market opportunities.
"Sound market information is essential to shape future strategy and we ignore market signals at our peril. Traditional markets that have served us well in the past are increasingly driven by low prices and may be less profitable in the future."
The Minister also advised that the EU Marketing of Quality Agricultural Products Grant Scheme remains open for applications.
Grant aid under the EU Marketing of Quality Agricultural Products Grant Scheme is at a rate of up to 50% – comprising 25% from the EU and 25% from national funds – subject to a maximum of £150,000.
A copy of the Scheme Brochure and the appropriate application form is available from the Supply Chain Development Branch, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development on 028 9052 4288.
