Design team commissioned for £300m hospital

Health Minister Shaun Woodward has agreed £2.6 million funding to design the new Women's and Children's Hospitals in Belfast.

The new hospitals will represent a final combined investment of more than £300 million and will provide new centralised maternity services for Belfast which will be physically linked to the new Children's Hospital.

The Minister said: "This is a very important project for Belfast and Northern Ireland. It will lead to one of the best women's and children's hospitals anywhere in the world. I have made available £2.62 million to allow the Royal Hospitals to work up the design of the new hospitals.

"I expect a Design Team to be appointed as soon as possible and look forward to seeing the Trust's proposals over the coming months. I wish to see effective and speedy progress in the design work so building can begin as soon as possible."

Work is expected to begin to begin on the new hospitals by May 2008, with the first phase of construction due to be completed by 2014 and the entire project completed by 2017.
