Charity targets NI fuel poverty
A leading charity has launched a new campaign aimed at combating fuel poverty among older people across Northern Ireland.
The booklet entitled 'Keep the warmth in', which is being distributed by Help the Aged, aims to tackle figures which showed that over the past year 1,280 people in the province died of cold-related illnesses, the majority of which were elderly.
NI Help the Aged spokesperson Grace Henry said: "Rising fuel costs coupled with poor housing conditions are consigning thousands of vulnerable older people to this unnecessary and cruel death.
"Our 'Keep the warmth in' campaign will offer practical advice to those worried about the cold. We want to see the government going the extra mile to ensure that no older person goes cold this winter."
Across the UK research reveals that 1.5 million older households are without proper heating or insulation. Of these homes, 75% are owner occupied or rented privately and are being "woefully assisted by Government".

The Alliance party Social Development Spokesperson Anna Lo has expressed shock at NI Housing Executive figures that show a 20% increase in the number of older people living on their own facing fuel poverty.
