Future of NI public libraries under spotlight

The future of Northern Ireland's libraries was under the spotlight today with the launch of a government consultation exercise aimed at improving services across the province.

'Northern Ireland's Libraries - A Framework for Change' is a three month initiative aimed at gauging opinion from people of all ages, including library users and non-users, to take a fresh look at the public library service and ways to improve it.

Culture Minister, David Hanson, said: "We want libraries to focus on the customer and to be inviting and welcoming. We want people to use them for leisure, pleasure and inspiration, as well as for learning.

"If we are to provide better library services we need investment in books, music and film; we need highly motivated and knowledgeable staff, attractive buildings and an efficient mobile library fleet to serve rural areas."

The Minister also announced an extra £1.6 million over the next two years for books and other stock during today's launch.
