Developers asked to submit plans for Coleraine regeneration
The Department for Social Development has asked developers to submit plans to regenerate two development sites in the centre of Coleraine.
Under the plans, the existing Abbey Street and Mall car parks in the town centre could be transformed with new shops, apartments and leisure facilities. The Department said it aims to "improve the range and type of shops in the town centre, to develop more of an evening economy, encourage town centre living and resolve the town's long standing parking problems by creating new parking spaces as part of any developments on the two sites".
Making the announcement at the British Council of Shopping Centres conference in Belfast, Social Development Minister David Hanson said: "Earlier this year I announced a set of regeneration objectives for Coleraine that have been drawn up by my Department.
"The opportunities in the town are significant - a recent report identified capacity for an additional 250,000 square feet of retail space by 2011 and substantial housing and leisure growth is planned in the coming years.
"The development of these sites will help to consolidate the positive work that DSD has undertaken in the town in recent years in association with Coleraine Borough Council including £3⁄4million to transform The Diamond with new paving, seating and lights, creating a public space worthy of the centre of Coleraine."
Prospective developers are invited to respond to the Department's brief for the Abbey Street and Mall car park sites. Developers may submit proposals for either site individually or for both sites jointly. DSD will then assess the proposals with Roads Service and Planning Service to select a short-list of prospective developments for more detailed analysis.

Government urge developers to revitalise old sites
The government is today urging property owners and developers to regenerate vacant, derelict and underused buildings or land to help revive five Northern Ireland towns. Social Development Minister David Hanson, has announced that he is to extend the Urban Development Grant (UDG) on a pilot basis to Ballymoney, Dungannon, Larne, Lurgan and Strabane.
